Summary of 2006 IHC Achievements
In 2006, the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative:
- Adapted its organizational model. IHC became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Additionally, it restructured the board and advisory committees to allow greater involvement of physicians, businesses, payers, government, and consumers.
- Held its 3rd Annual Conference on Quality, Patient Safety and Value in November of 2006.
- Produced this 2nd Annual Iowa Report, presenting information on clinical quality, patient safety and value in Iowa.
- Promoted the National Quality Forum's 30 Safe Practices through continued work in patient safety with Iowa providers.
- Evaluated designation as a Patient Safety Organization as described under new federal legislation.
- Developed online toolkits to equip providers with performance improvement resources.
- Convened the first Iowa Patient Safety Conference during National Patient Safety Week in March.
- Promoted participation in Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) with the Iowa Foundation for Medical Care (IFMC). Sponsored by the American Hospital Association, this project works to reduce post-surgical mortality through enhancements in the care provided to surgical patients.
- Enhanced IHC's website (www.ihconline.org) to serve as a resource for providers.
- Served as the Iowa field office for the IHI 100,000 Lives Campaign in 2005 and 2006. This national initiative through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) works to reduce mortality through the spread of a set of evidence-based interventions.
- Worked with Iowa physicians and hospitals to standardize reporting format, develop outcomes measures, and improve performance in Healthcare-Associated
Infections (HAIs). Information on HAIs has been added to this report in 2006 and will be expanded in 2007.
- Worked with IFMC and the University of Iowa College of Public Health to develop credible outcome measures for Iowa based on the AHRQ and CMS databases.
- Worked with the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA), the Iowa Medical Society (IMS), IFMC, and physician groups to create strategies to enhance physician engagement projects. This initiative was improved through statewide meetings with physicians.
- Worked closely with IMS, IFMC, and the University of Iowa to address the deployment, interconnectedness, portability and standardization of health information technology.
- Developed strategies with the Iowa Department of Public Health, IFMC, the Chronic Care Consortium, and the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians to improve chronic care treatment for Iowans with chronic disease.
- Worked with the Iowa Business Council to present and promote industry process improvement models such as Lean to Iowa healthcare providers.
