IHC Work Plan Description — Public Reporting

Executive Summary

Iowa providers deliver some of the highest value care in the country, with quality consistently above national averages and costs well below national averages. Iowa hospitals and physicians are committed to clinical improvement and believe that improvement must begin with measurement. Sharing these measurements publicly will hopefully spark discussion and encourage the sharing of innovative best practices.

IHC is dedicated to responsible public reporting of these measures. Great strides are being made in healthcare performance measurement with new process and outcomes measures developed from evidence-based medicine. Public reporting is still a new exercise, and IHC feels it is important to use this information carefully. While promoting an environment of transparency, it is important to use this information as much to ask the next question as to draw specific conclusions. IHC will use this information to draw conclusions, but especially to illuminate the opportunities for improvement.

We believe that clinical performance and value will be the basis of the next generation of healthcare reimbursement. Our commitment to transparency today prepares us for the future. Iowa clinical performance information is presented in the following pages.
